Our Aims and Objectives

To collect and archive material from Ugandan Asians who arrived in the UK in 1972, expelled by Idi Amin. For example: photographs, newspaper articles, letters to loved ones, items they bought over with them. Suitcases, blankets, postcards, pots and pans and so on. Alongside this we aim to start a collection of new audio stories that haven’t already been captured elsewhere. The Archive would also include programme material from the BBC TV , Radio and individual sources.

To create a temporary home for these at the Documentary Media Centre with the hope of touring with them in 2022 to Mark the 50th Anniversary of the expulsion and to find a permanent home where they become accessible to all future generations and can be used a learning tool. We also aim to make these accessible online via our website and social media platforms. This archive is just one strand of a larger project we hope to bring people.

Other plans include Podcasts, Books, Photography, A documentary, Storytelling workshops and more for which we will be seeking funding or sponsorship opportunities.
